Bandera senior wide receiver Corben Gonzales was selected to participate in the 24th annual San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game to be held on Jan. 6, 2024, at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Gonzales has been a force to be reckoned with on the perimeter of the Bandera offense this year, racking up 29 catches for 508 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games. Gonzales has made numerous highlight-reel worthy catches for the Bulldogs, helping lead the team to a 7-1 record through eight games this season.
“We are so proud of Corben,” Bandera Athletic Director and Head Coach Joel Fontenot-Amedee said. “We are fortunate to have him on our team, and he is very deserving of representing Bandera in the all-star game. I think you can see Corben’s impact on our team and program every week. He is a playmaker! Corben shows up to practice and goes 100 percent every play. It’s the only speed he knows and that mentality is contagious.”
According to SanAntonioSports.org, since 1978, the San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game has been a showcase of the area’s top high school football talent with a goal of shining a light on local players and enhancing their opportunities for college scholarships.
The game was originally formed by the Kiwanis Club and later operated by Kids Sports Network until 2013. Since 2014, the game has been managed by San Antonio Sports and held in the Alamodome following the All-American Bowl, which features more than 100 of the nation’s best players and is televised on NBC.
The 2023 game featured 120 seniors representing 64 San Antonio area high schools.
The Gold Team features players from Alamo Heights, Antonian College Prep, Brandeis, Burbank, Canyon, Churchill, Cole, Davenport, Harlandale, Hondo, Johnson, Judson, Luling, MacArthur, Madison, Marion, Medina Valley, Navarro, New Braunfels, O’Connor, Pieper, Randolph, Sam Houston, Seguin, Smithson Valley, Sotomayor, Southwest, Steele, Stevens, Veterans Memorial, Warren, YMLA and Bandera.
Madison Coach Blaine Pederson will coach the Gold Team.
“Getting selected to this game is a once in a lifetime type of blessing,” Gonzales said. “I am so thankful for the opportunity to be able to play in this game and will definitely give it every last thing I’ve got.”
