Keep in Beat with the Bandera Library
By Mauri Guillén Fagan
Bandera Library Director
We are counting down to one of our favorite times of the year – Spooky Season! Stop by the library’s display at the annual Nightmare on Maple Street on Halloween night, Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 6 - 8 p.m. The library will be giving trick-or-treaters free books and we can’t wait to see all your costumes.
Monday, Oct. 30, from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. is our Lunch and Learn program in collaboration with the AgriLife Extension office. This four-week program is all about learning how to create healthy, delicious meals on a budget. You will even get to sample the recipes. Please register in advance by calling the library or 830-796-7755 that way we have enough ingredients for everyone coming.
Mondays are also our weekly Pokemon League meetings from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Join the fun and play the official Pokemon card game and discuss your favorite anime. This program is for tweens and early teens.
Believe it or not, we are rapidly approaching November. The Monthly Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m., to discuss this month’s read: “The Warrior Woman” by Maxine Hong Kingston. This book is part memoir and part mythology where the author retells the “talk-story” tales her Chinese immigrant mother brought with her from her homeland. In these stories, only strong, resilient woman can take on the rigid culture in which they live. “Warrior Woman” was originally published in 1976 and has been considered a classic ever since. The Book Club is also voting on what titles they will be reading in 2024 so now it a great time to get involved if you have been wanting to join the group.
Don’t pass up this month’s Monthly Book Fair hosted by the Friends of the Library the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. I checked the calendar and Christmas is exactly two months away. (Critical high yikes!) The book fair is the perfect place to find books, movies, music or games for your friends and family. Everything is available by donation and the proceeds go towards the purchase of new books for the library’s collection. Also on Saturday is the return of Dungeons & Dragons. Our Dungeon Master has finally returned from his real-life adventures and has been spending his free time cooking up fresh adventures for our DnDers. The group meets on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. All levels are welcome!
Bandera Kronkosky Public Library is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curbside service is available upon request. Free Wi-Fi is available 24/7. Stay up to date with library events by following us on social media (@BanderaLibrary), or sign up for our monthly newsletter through our website at www.banderalibrary.org.
Happy tales, y’all.
