The Bandera JV basketball team competed at the Medina Athletic Booster Club Varsity Tournament over the weekend and finished with the consolation championship in a tie for third place after posting a 2-1-1 record through four games.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start against a solid Kipp University Prep varsity team but bounced back in a big way with wins over Kipp Somos varsity team and the Comfort JV team. Bandera closed things out with a thrilling 60-60 double overtime tie against the Bracketville varsity squad.
“I think our team played at a high level,” JV Coach Charlie Boling said. “It was good to see them get out there and compete. We definitely took some big strides as a team and look to keep pushing forward and getting better as the season progresses. I’m very proud of the effort that everyone gave and can’t wait to see how they build on it moving forward.”
After struggling offensively in a 60-25 loss Friday against Kipp University Prep, the Bulldogs responded with a 56-26 win over Kipp Somos and allowed just two total points in the second half. Logan Pierce had a game-high 18 points while James Bower and Jackson Satterfield added nine apiece in the victory.
On Saturday, Bandera defeated the Comfort JV 46-38. The Bulldogs were led by James Bower with 12 points and Riley Moran with nine.
In the team’s final game of the weekend, the Bulldogs gave the Bracketville varsity team everything it could handle and pushed the game to overtime and then double overtime after a pair of clutch 3-point shots from Pierce. The game was called at the end of the second overtime period in an effort to keep the tournament championship games on schedule at the end of the night.
Pierce finished with eight points while Moran had 13 and Bower had 10. Satterfield had nine points, and Anden Tentis De Grote finished with seven for the Bulldogs.
Junior Julian De La Paz was crowned the tournament’s 3-point champion after winning the halftime competition, while freshman Cooper Franklin took home the free throw champion award while going 9-for-10 from the line in the competition. Bower earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
The JV Bulldogs went on to defeat Devine 61-43 Tuesday night, pushing the team’s record to 4-5-1 on the season. Bower had 16 points in that win while Pierce added 12 and Gavin Garcia scored 11. Gattlin Winkler had eight points in the win for Bandera.
The JV Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday at Bandera High School for the Bandera JV Tournament.
“We are looking forward to hosting a great tournament on Saturday,” Head Boys Basketball Coach Brady Keane said. “Hosting a tournament is a great experience for our kids and it gives our community a chance to support our kids for three games on their home floor all in one day. We look forward to a packed house on Saturday!”
