The Bandera boys basketball team split a pair of games against Fredericksburg and Davenport last week, moving the team to 14-11 on the season and 2-3 in District 27-4A play.
The Bulldogs opened the week with a 49-40 win over the Battlin’ Billies, recording the program’s fourth straight win over Fredericksburg at the varsity level. Bandera controlled the majority of the second half and held the Billies to just seven points in the final eight minutes to secure the win.
Senior Bryson Holden had a team-high 13 points and added six rebounds while junior Elijah Salas had 11 points and eight rebounds in the win. Sophomore Jeffry Thomas had seven points and five rebounds, senior Isaac Segura had six points and five rebounds, senior Cale Barnett and six points and five rebounds, and senior Corben Gonzales had four points.
“We didn’t have our best offensive outing against Fredericksburg but the defensive intensity was there from start to finish,” Head Coach Brady Keane said. “Isaac and Beau did a tremendous job on the interior of our defense and I thought Eli and Jeffry did a great job of making plays in the fourth quarter and ensuring our offense was executed properly with the clock in mind down the stretch.”
The Bulldogs then traveled to Davenport Friday night and suffered a tough loss as the Wolves exploded offensively and shot 69% from the field in the win. Bandera struggled to keep pace as Davenport, who is undefeated in district, knocked down 12 3-point shots.
Junior Layne Bourgeois was the team’s leading scorer while shooting 50% from the 3-point line (nine points, four rebounds). Thomas had eight points and Salas had seven points and four rebounds.
“Davenport started hot and we found ourselves in a tough hole from the get-go,” Keane said. “We didn’t play up to our standard defensively and just didn’t make enough plays on the offensive end. It was a good wake-up call for our guys and I think they’ll be ready to go the next time we step on the floor.”
The Bulldogs have a their first district open date on Tuesday, Jan. 16, and will return to action on the road against state-ranked No. 18 Boerne Friday night. The Greyhounds and Wolves, who are both undefeated in district play, will compete on Wednesday night to determine first place in district thus far.
After traveling to Boerne, Bandera will return home for a rematch against Wimberley at home Tuesday night. The Bulldogs let a close one slip away against the Texans in the district opener, falling 62-56.
“Our bye comes at the right time and we’ll be full speed ready to go later this week,” Keane said. “The biggest focus for us moving forward is going to just be concentrating on us and what we do well. It’s easy to get caught up in the district standings and what’s happening throughout the district, but if we take care of business on our home court and are able to steal some games on the road by doing what we do well on both ends of the floor, we’ll be in a good position down the stretch.”
