The Bandera boys soccer team recorded wins over Poteet and Pearsall last week to improve the team’s record to 2-3-1 early in the season.
The Bulldogs took down Poteet 7-2 on Tuesday night before knocking off Pearsall 3-0 on Friday in a game that was shortened due to a Mavericks’ injury late in the first half.
“After facing some tough opponents in Austin the week before last, the team really started putting together some good practice sessions and individually some players improved their speed of play,” Head Coach Westley Miller said.
Junior Jace Knowles had an impressive four-goal effort against Poteet to kick the week off, helping the Bulldogs break a halftime tie and fueling an offensive explosion in the second half. Junior Ibraham MacNeil had two goals and sophomore Quinn King added one goal in the victory.
Bandera goalie Conner Garrett and the Bulldogs’ defense, including senior Hudson Jackson, junior Nino Martinez and senior Jorge Cabasos, held Poteet scoreless in the second half.
“The team played well in both halves of the Poteet game, we just couldn’t finish on frame,” Miller said. “In the second half, we stayed persistent and found ways to finish on frame and play team soccer.”
The Bulldogs carried that momentum into Friday night’s game against Pearsall, as Knowles added two more goals while junior Hayden Swalve added another. Bandera held Pearsall scoreless before the game was called due to a Mavericks’ injury.
“Our effort was great vs Pearsall,” Miller said. “We were able to maintain possession and get ahead on them pretty early.”
Bandera will return to action at home Friday night against San Antonio Kennedy.
“Friday’s match vs JFK will give us a good look at how we will match up vs some of our district opponents,” Miller said. “If we can come out aggressive and under control it should be a good competitive match for us.”
