The Bandera girls basketball team fell just short of a big upset win over Davenport Friday night to wrap up the first round of district play, giving the team plenty of positives entering the second round of district later this week.
The Lady Bulldogs (16-12, 0-6) were tied 21-21 at the half of Friday night’s game against the Lady Wolves, but a slow third quarter helped Davenport build a bit of a lead they were able to protect down the stretch of a 49-40 win.
Junior Gabby Barrera had 12 points, two rebounds and two steals, sophomore Taytum Moeller had eight points, four rebounds and two steals, and senior Madelyn Garza had six points to lead the way for Bandera.
“I was really proud of the way the girls competed against Davenport,” Head Coach Cody Carruthers said. “It was exactly what I want to see from our Lady Bulldogs. We fought hard from start to finish and it was a great game that we could have won.”
While the Lady Bulldogs closed out the first six games of district play without a victory, the team has surpassed last year’s win total and fell just short of wins against both Canyon Lake and Davenport.
Bandera will return to play Friday night at home against state-ranked No. 8 Boerne, looking to build some momentum heading into the second round of district play.
“We have a really tough district and everyone knows that,” Carruthers said. “However, my approach is still the same. We have to continue to get better each week and compete without fear of failing. We are still preaching mental and physical toughness and we are a different team than in years past. We are not done yet and hope to scare a few teams in this second round.”
