‘Riders of the Storm: The True Story of the the Eye Reckon Freedom Ride’ author commemorates 20th anniversary of historic trailride
Honoring the 20th anniversary of her historic trailride from Bandera to Canada, author Mary Schenk recently regaled her memories of the once-in-a-lifetime experience that gained international attention.
Schenk chronicled the event, which she shared with her partner, the late Hoot Gibson, in her book, Riders of the Storm: The True Story of the Eye Reckon Freedom Ride, written under her nom de plume, Mary Allyce.
On Jan. 20, 2004, the trailride left Bandera, and arrived at Calgary Stampede Headquarters on July 8.
“We rode 2,500 miles in five months and 19 days from the ‘Cowboy Capital of the World’ to the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,’ the Calgary Stampede,” Schenk said, who retold the amazing story to a packed house in the Frontier Times Museum’s Doane Western Art Gallery.
