The Bandera varsity baseball team started the 2024 season in a big way, jumping out to a 14-2 win over Poteet in the season opener Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs started the game with a three-up-three-down inning defensively and scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take control of the game from the get-go. Senior Carson Powers got the start on the mound and delivered three innings while striking out four and allowing one hit and one earned run. Freshman Cooper Gunderman and sophomore Payson Mangold each threw a hitless inning on the mound in relief.
At the plate, junior Randon Wheeler and sophomore Benton Cloudt tallied two hits and two RBIs each. Gunderman, Brady Trussell, West Cloudt, Mangold and Caleb Hohan each had a hit as well, with Hohan and Mangold combining for four RBIs in the win.
“I was really pleased with how we started,” Bandera Coach Cody Fields said. “We threw strikes on the mound and made some good defensive plays. We were aggressive at the plate at took advantage of some of their mistakes. But we made a few mistakes and had a few bad at bats that we can get fixed before the weekend.”
Bandera will have plenty of opportunity to continue the strong start to the season with four games in two days at the Pearsall Tournament. The Bulldogs took on Hondo and San Antonio Christian School on Thursday and will play San Antonio Lanier and Dilley on Friday.
Bandera will return home to play Ingram on Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
