On Friday and Saturday, the Bandera High School speech and debate team competed at the NSDA Gulf Coast District Contest in Harlingen. This is a national qualifying tournament where Bandera competed against teams from all size conferences. Students must earn points throughout the year in order to qualify to compete.
Sophomore Alyssa Ruch (extemp and LD debate), Junior Braden Valle (extemp and Big Questions debate), and Senior Savannah Venegas (POI and extemp) competed for the first time at this meet. These Bulldogs worked hard, some of them competed in events for the very first time, and all had great results.
Congratulations to Micah McCreary for placing third in Lincoln Douglas Debate. This is Micah’s second time at this tournament, competing at Nationals last year in Extemp Debate. After two very difficult days of competition, Micah earned the alternate spot to Nationals after six rounds of debate. Micah also competed in Congressional debate and extemp.
The Speech and Debate team has had great success since the beginning of their season in September, and we look forward to much more. Up next will be the UIL Academic District meet in April. BHS Academic coaches are hard at work and their students have been competing extremely well at invitationals all year. We expect another great day for our Bulldogs at District and we’re looking forward to Regionals!
