Sheriff Elvious Hicks
End of Watch: March 20, 1932
Bandera County Sheriff Elvious Hicks lost his life 92 years ago, when Ben H. Clark ambushed and shot him.
Hicks, 53, had confiscated a whiskey still from Clark months prior to March 20, 1932, when Clark fired his shotgun at Hicks as he was leaving a dance at Mansfield Park, killing him. Clark attempted a get-away, but was fatally shot by Deputy Billy Burns.
Hicks served Bandera County as sheriff for five years. He is buried at the front of the Bandera Cemetery near Hwy. 173, and he is memorialized on the Texas Peace Officers Memorial in Austin, on panel 30-B, line 9.
