Bandera Bulldog Baseball falls to Fredericksburg in extra-inning battle
By Brady Keane
The Bandera Prophet
The Bandera baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to Fredericksburg Tuesday night as the Billies rallied for a 10-9 win in a game that stretched more than four hours and lasted a compete 11 innings.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning and led 6-1 after five, but Fredericksburg tallied a five run sixth inning to take the lead. Bandera responded with the tying run in the bottom of the sixth after walks from Brady Trussell, Randon Wheeler, Jesse Cardenas and Caleb Hohon, but the Billies were able to limit the damage and escaped a bases loaded jam to enter the 7th tied at 7-7.
Fredericksburg added two runs in the top of the 10th inning, and the Bulldogs responded again after Breydan Franklin hit an RBI single to score Layne Bourgeois while Trussell added a sacrifice fly to score Benton Cloudt and extend the game to the 11th.
A solo home run in the top of the frame gave the Billies the lead, and Bandera was unable to bring the tying run across the plate in the bottom of the 11th as the Bulldogs fell to 8-9 on the season.
“We are starting to play with a little confidence,” Bandera Head Baseball Coach Cody Fields said. “That showed last night. We jumped up on them early, and gave up a big inning and could have laid down. We answered, and tied the game a couple different times and put ourselves in a position to win the game. We just have to find a way to get over the hump, but I like the direction we are going.”
Trussell and Hohon finished with two RBIs apiece to lead the way offensively for the Bulldogs while Franklin, Cooper Gunderman and Wheeler each added an RBI as well. Payson Mangold also contributed with a big game at the plate, tallying two hits, one walk and a run scored.
Carson Powers got the start on the mound and went a complete five innings while allowing four hits and three earned runs to go along with three strikeouts. Benton Cloudt finished things up out of the bullpen for Bandera, going a strong six innings while allowing three earned runs and posting four strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will look to bounce back from Tuesday’s loss on Friday when they travel to take on Canyon Lake in the final game of the first round of district play.
“The big thing for Friday is coming out ready to play,” Fields said. “Our district is relatively even right now. If we come out like we played most of the night, we can get the win and get right in the middle of the hunt for the playoffs.”
