The Bandera baseball team picked up a crucial victory over Canyon Lake on Friday, riding a solid performance from sophomore Payson Mangold on the mound to claim a 6-2 win over the Hawks.
Mangold went six innings while allowing just three hits and two earned runs before Caleb Hohon finished things with a scoreless seventh inning. The win pushed the Bulldogs back to .500 on the season at 9-9 and 1-4 in district play, just a game out of the District 27-4A playoff race.
“It was huge for our kids to get in the win column,” Bandera Head Baseball Coach Cody Fields said. “They have been working their tails off and we let one slip away last Tuesday. For us to finish off the win Friday was big.”
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double from Mangold that scored Hohon, and Bandera made it 5-0 with a four run effort in the third. Randon Wheeler had a 2 RBI single to score West Cloudt and Cooper Gunderman, Jesse Cardenas had an RBI fielder’s choice to score Brady Trussell, and Mangold added an RBI fielder’s choice to score Cardenas.
Canyon Lake trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Layne Bourgeois to secure the win.
“We didn’t try to do too much at the plate,” Fields said. “We made the pitcher come to us. We didn’t chase pitches but were ready when they came over the plate. We put balls in play and put pressure on them all night.”
Wheeler and Mangold led the way at the plate for the Bulldogs as Wheeler finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Mangold went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hohon and Bourgeois also tallied a hit for Bandera, while Trussell, Cardenas, Bourgeois, Benton Cloudt and West Cloudt reached base via a walk.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday and Thursday this week with a two-game series against district leader Boerne. Bandera will travel to take on the Greyhounds at 7 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Boerne at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“We have two opportunities to go after the district leader this week,” Fields said. “The main thing I’m looking for is for us to be the aggressor. I want our kids to come in with a chip on their shoulders, have confidence and get after them.”
