Bandera County is recycling
By Bob Brischetto
Don’t Make Waste Bandera
The Bandera County recycling initiative of Don’t Make Waste Bandera (DMWB) has been up and running for the past 16 months and the success of its operation can be attributed to the efforts of many:
- The residents of Bandera County who have shown strong interest in restarting and supporting the recycling program;
- The DMWB nonprofit board members and their dedicated volunteers who have planned and worked tirelessly to insure proper recycling collection; and,
- The Bandera County Commissioners Court liaison - Pct. 4 Commissioner Jody Rutherford - who has collaborated with DMWB volunteers to reinstate recycling in the community.
The county has partnered with Keep Texas Recycling (KTR), a statewide nonprofit rural recycling cooperative, in order to ensure that 100 percent of what is recycled does not end up in the landfill. Bandera County collaborates with KTR to haul collected and baled recyclables to market. Profits from the sales comes back to the county to help pay for the maintenance of baling machines and equipment at the recycling center.
The recycle center - available to all county residents - is located next to the Bandera Solid Waste Station on Hwy. 16, between Mansfield Park and the Bandera Electric Coop. Hours of operation are Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are onsite to supervise the collection of acceptable items which include: #1 clear plastic drinking bottles, aluminum drink cans and corrugated cardboard. There is no charge to the public for these recycling services.
Currently, there are more than 300 recycling visitors per month dropping off their items. Thus far, 37.5 tons of recyclables have been collected and kept out our landfill!
DMWB volunteers are elated by the continued positive response from the residents coming to the recycling center on Saturdays. A big Thank You to everyone in the county who participates in this way.
Volunteers are always needed to help supervise for one three-hour shift each month. Contact Janus Olive at [email protected]. Follow our Facebook page: BanderaRecycles.
