Mary Margaret Carr Anderson
July 1, 1936 ~ April 16, 2024
Mary Margaret Carr Anderson, 87, of Bandera, passed away April 16, 2024, in Bandera.
She was born in San Antonio, on July 1, 1936, and raised in Medina, where she attended Medina Schools through high school. Mary Margaret was an active participant with school functions and sports. She was also a member of the Medina Methodist Church and involved in youth activities. Mary graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas with a teaching degree. Upon graduation, she began her teaching career at Highlands High School in San Antonio, and retired from Highlands after devoting 37 years to her students and faculty. During her tenure she also taught summer and night school.
Mary Margaret met her future husband, Joseph Anderson, while teaching night school. They eventually married during spring break of 1989, at Polly's Chapel in Bandera. They eventually retired from teaching in 1995 and relocated to Bandera. Mary Margaret's passion for education went well beyond just the classroom. Many of her former students kept in contact with her throughout their adult life. This was evident by just a month before her passing a former student came to visit with her.
Mary Margaret is preceded in death by her parents Cecil Thomas Carr and Ethel Maude Newcomer Carr; husband Joseph Carl Anderson; aunts Mattie Mae Pue (Judge A.V. Pue), and Joyce Griffin (Edward); uncle Joe Harvey Newcomer; sister-in-law Lee Carr; and nieces Evelyn Schmidtke and Barbara Lynn Carr Pacini.
Mary Margaret is survived by brother Richard Carr; sisters Joyce Meeker and Cecelia Schmidtke (Jim Syfrett); nephews Tom Schmidtke (Susan), Bill Schmidtke, Gary Schmidtke (Angela), Rick Carr (Barbara), Howard James (Annette), Brian James (Karen); great nieces and nephews Monica Halsey (Lance), Stephen James, Kevin James, Ben Schmidtke (Kristin), Nicole Lyons, Allison Davidson (Seth), Dan Schmidtke, John Pacini (Monica), and Jackie Hermann (Josh); and numerous great, great nieces and nephews.
Our family expresses gratitude to Cedar Creek Nursing Facility for the love and care they provided Mary Margaret for the 19 months she resided there, as well as the EMTs who responded for their expertise, care, and compassion they showed our family.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday April 30, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, from noon to 1:30 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Graveside service will be held on Wednesday May 1, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, at 10:30 a.m.
