The Bandera boys track team finished its 2024 season by getting on the board at the regional meet at Texas A&M Kingsville, where junior Sam Snavely finished five in the 400m run.
Snavely, who finished 8th in the prelims on Friday afternoon, clocked a time of 51.63 to finish fifth in the finals on Saturday. Snavely placed ahead of both Sealy’s Ivan Cadenas and Devine’s Donovan Dixon.
“Sam got the last qualifying spot out of prelims, and he improved his spot by 3 in the finals,” Bandera head track Coach Sam Farrell said. “He did a great job of getting out there and competing well, and his effort gave the boys a scoring performance at regionals.”
Snavely was excited about the way he competed with a trip to the state track and field meet on the line and is looking forward to improving his time and making another run at the state meet next season.
Bandera’s Esteban Leyva also competed at the regional meet, placing 16th in prelims with a time of 16.69.
“Esteban did not qualify for finals, but he finished off an awesome season as one of the best competitors in a very competitive region for hurdles,” Farrell said.
The meet was bittersweet for Farrell, as it marked his final competition as Bandera’s head boys track coach. Farrell is returning to East Texas at the conclusion of the school year in order to be closer to family.
“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to coach in Bandera these last four years,” Farrell said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity I’ve had to work with some amazing athletes. I’d like to thank Coach Ashcraft, Coach Amedee, and every other coach I’ve worked with for helping me grow in this profession each year. I’ll be continuing my coaching career in East Texas where I can be closer to family.”
