The National Day of Prayer was observed Thursday, May 2, with Christopher Dion leading the community in prayer on the Bandera County courthouse lawn.
The National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday in May. Designated by the United States Congress, the president each year signs a proclamation encouraging Americans of all religions and denominations to pray on this day.
Sharing common roots with Thanksgiving - a fall day of thanks and prayer introduced under British rule and made official by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Day of Prayer into law in 1952 as its spring counterpart.
On Sunday, May 12, through Monday, May 13, the Bandera American Legion Post 157 will honor Police Officers Memorial Day by hosting a 24-hour vigil.
At 5 a.m., on May 12, Dion will take first watch. He will be relieved at 6 a.m., by Larry Marsh, of American Legion Post 158.
Other participants include Kenny and Jackie Obannon; Luche and John Dion; Bandera Marshal Nancy De Foster; Mark Caronna; Bandera County Sheriff Dan Butts; Will Dietrich; Niamh Kennedy; Joshua Teitge; Andrew Adam; Martin Ferguson; Luis Estela; Raylee Dinova; Jim and Pauline Rickel; and Gary Hetrick.
The Bandera Naval JROTC will present colors, and Bandera County Boy Scout Groop 146 will lead a flag retirement ceremony.
